Beijing Olympics Day 13 : Stellar performance sees Percy-Simpson clinch Star sailing gold

Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson have won Star class gold on a thrilling final day of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Regatta today, leaving Britain’s sailors with their best Olympic medal haul for 100 years.

Sydney 2000 Finn gold medallist Percy and Simpson, making his Olympic debut, went into the race two points behind Swedes Freddie Loof and Anders Ekstrom but with one eye also on Brazilians Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada behind them in third.

In a nail-biting encounter, Percy and Simpson executed a tactically perfect race, the Swedes being forced to gybe on the first downwind run and the Brits edging their noses ahead, a position they refused to relinquish for the rest of the race.

At times, Scheidt and Prada, who had taken the race to the rest of the fleet and built a big lead on the first lap, appeared to threaten the gold, meaning Percy and Simpson not only had to stay ahead of the Swedes but also finish in the top six.

But as the Brazilians fell down the fleet, it became a straight head-to-head between Great Britain and Sweden and in a scintillating sprint to the finish line, Percy and Simpson surfed over the line in fifth place, with the Swedes 11 seconds behind in 10th for the gold to go to the Brits with a final tally 45 points overall.

Beijing Olympics : Anna Tunnicliffe on her Gold Medal
admin,Wednesday 20 August 2008 - 09:18:33 // comment: 0

I won the Laser Radial Olympic Gold Medal today! [Tues, 19th August]. As I stood on the podium this afternoon for the medal presentation, I had this flashback. I was standing in the same position as I had a year ago when I won the pre-Olympic regatta in Qingdao. But this time it was real!

This is something I’ve wanted so long and now all the emotions are crowding in on me. Everything has been a whirlwind since I finished racing nearly four hours ago. As I sit down to write this, it’s feels like the first time I’ve stopped to draw a breath, but the high is still continuing. I’ve been told to expect a call from the Wall Street Journal! And I’ve been reminded by reporters that I’m the first American sailor to win Gold in these games..

My race today wasn’t easy and I’m sure I caused some heart-stopping moments for all the American supporters who crowded the breakwater along the right hand side of the course. Overall, it was a pretty stressful race. The breeze was light and shifty, from the northwest. I got out there early to watch the Men’s Laser Medal Race and see what I could learn.

For our race, the fleet crowded the weather end of the line and I heard at least one boat called over early as we started. I was right next to her and I wasn’t going to take any chances so I went back too, along with a couple of other boats.

Gul RS400 Nationals Championships at Exe SC

It’s national championship time again at Exe Sailing Club next week, when 45 boats and 90 sailors from the RS400 fleet will converge on Exmouth from sailing clubs all over the UK for the 2008 Gul RS400 Nationals Championships.

This is the first major championships to be hosted by Exe SC since the hugely successful RS200 event in 2006. The two-person RS400, like its smaller sister the RS200, was designed by Exmouth-based Phil Morrison.

Weather permitting, the racing will be held out at sea and spectators on Exmouth’s sea front will be treated to the sight of this large fleet of dinghies making their way out to the sailing area after launching from the beach near the sailing club, and sailing back again after racing.

The club has organised a full social programme too, which gets under way with a civic reception on Sunday evening to be attended by Exmouth’s mayor and a number of town councillors.

Racing starts on Sunday 24 August at 1pm, and goes on until Thursday 28 August.

Beijing Olympics Day 12 : Shaw delights in windsurfing bronze

Bryony Shaw has won Great Britain’s first ever women’s windsurfing medal clinching RS:X bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in Qingdao today (Wednesday 20 August).

Shaw, who won the 2007 Olympic Test Event, knew a top three finish in the double points medal race would guarantee her a medal at her first ever Olympic Games, going into the race in bronze medal position eight points behind leader Jian Yin (CHN) and five behind Alessandra Sensini (ITA) in second.

The Brit showed her intent from the off, flying off the start line at the second time of asking following a general recall, reaching the top mark in second and nudging into first place at the bottom mark.

But after World Champion Sensini had taken over at the front of the fleet heading down to the slalom finish, Shaw dug in and stayed comfortably ahead of nearest challengers Jessica Crisp (AUS) and Marina Alabau (ESP) to finish the race second and take the bronze.

Yin finished the race in third place to claim gold with 39 points, Sensini taking silver with 40 and Shaw winning bronze with 45.

Anna Tunnicliffe won the USA's first gold medal of the 2008 Olympic Sailing Competition following a magnificent comeback in the Laser Radial Medal Race held today.

At one stage in today’s Medal Race Anna Tunnicliffe had fallen back to ninth but she battled back, reading a big shift on the second upwind leg and eventually crossing the finishing line in second place to secure the gold medal.

Aged just 25, the world #1 skipper can now add Olympic gold to her list of achievements. After sailing back along the breakwater at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center to cheers of delight from the US supporters, Tunnicliffe was elated as she returned to the boatpark.

Beijing Olympics Day 11 : Laser gold for Goodison

Paul Goodison has won Laser class gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in Qingdao today (Tuesday 19 August).

Four-time European champion Goodison, who finished fourth on his Olympic debut at Athens 2004, lead the fleet by 18 points going into today’s double points medal race meaning as long as the Brit did not finish 10th and last in the race and second-placed Swede Rasmus Myrgren win it, the Olympic crown would be Goodison’s. Goodison made no mistake in sealing the biggest prize of them all in light winds, sailing the Swede to the back of the fleet at the start and pinning him there throughout the race, stopping Myrgren have any chance of reaching the front and threatening gold.
